Building Trust with Social Proof

Getting new clients who haven't worked with you before requires a certain level of trust to be built. The way this trust is built is through seeing and hearing about how other people enjoyed working with you and how they found the experience. This collective feedback is known as social proof, and it is often the deciding factor between someone reaching out to connect with you or not.
Think about the last time you decided to try a new restaurant or service provider. You most likely checked their reviews and looked into what other people had to say about them first. Your potential clients and customers are doing the same thing on your website, whether you've shown them your reviews or not.

What Social Proof Actually Looks Like

Social proof isn't one specific thing, it's any visible sign that real people trust you. On a website, that can take several forms:

  • Customer testimonials displayed prominently on your homepage or service pages
  • Star ratings and reviews pulled from Google or Facebook
  • Case studies or before-and-after stories that showcase real results
  • Logos of well-known clients or partners you've worked with
  • Certifications, awards, or memberships to industry associations
  • A running count of customers served or years in business

None of these need to be flashy. A single, specific testimonial from a real client often does more work than a wall of generic five-star ratings.

You've Probably Already Earned It

If you really look, you probably already have social proof sitting in your inbox, it just hasn't been showcased on your website yet. Kind words from a client emailed to you, a message thanking you for going above and beyond, a comment on a social post, these are a goldmine that's easy to overlook simply because they were never meant to be marketing material.

Before writing new testimonial requests, it's worth going back through old emails, DMs, and reviews first. You may already have exactly what you need.

Why This Matters for AI Visibility Too

Social proof isn't only great for building trust with visitors, it also plays a role in how AI tools decide what to recommend. When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in your industry, tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews draw on real-world signals, including reviews and user-generated content, to work out who's actually trusted, not just who's ranking well. A website with genuine, specific testimonials gives these tools something concrete to point to.

Where to Start

Pick two or three pieces of feedback you've already received and give them a proper home, on your homepage, a dedicated testimonials section, or right alongside the relevant service. If you're not sure what you have, it's worth spending twenty minutes searching your inbox for words like "thank you" or "amazing," you'll likely be surprised by what turns up.

If you'd like a hand deciding where social proof should live on your site, or turning scattered feedback into something structured and usable, that's exactly the kind of thing we help clients with. Feel free to reach out.
